No field of study could improve further, and have newer findings without the systematic investigation into and study of the prior and current knowledge. This very term “systematic investigation” is the crux of countless hours of dedicated work i.e., Research done in any field. Research, as aptly put by the famous American astronaut Neil Armstrong is “creating new knowledge”!! Research is a formalized way of getting answers to one’s curiosity.

The field of Teacher education too is not an exception to this structured way of expanding the boundaries of one’s understanding and develop effective teaching strategies as an educator. As a practicing educator, research can help one find solutions to specific problems he/she is facing in his/her classroom sessions. It helps the educators broaden their understanding and knowledge about the subject of their interest. Extensive research can help educators realise and develop their personal teaching philosophy, help identify new effective assessment methods and keeps them informed about the advances in teaching pedagogy. Practice oriented research is helpful to the educators immensely, wherein they can introspect their work, analyse it, and draw valuable inference and try it in the classroom to make it a better teaching and learning experience.

Unfortunately, the research is mainly restricted to tertiary educational institutes in India, and we are not even talking about research in teacher education. It will be definitely a step forward if primary and middle school educators are encouraged and trained by their respective school/institute managements in order to pursue research. If a little introspection and reflection session by a sincere teacher can go long way in improving his/her teaching strategy, imagine what wonders will extensive research by the same teacher do to his teaching skills and competency!!
