The Three Pillars Of Mentoring – Inspire, Think and Achieve

By Dr. Apoorva Udayashankara

The word “Mentor” originates from Homer’s Odyssey, where Mentor was a trusted friend of Odysseus, guiding his son Telemachus in his father’s absence. The goddess Athena, in Mentor’s form, offered wisdom, courage, and clarity just like our modern mentors today. This ancient image captures the essence of mentoring as I see it: Inspiring values and action, nurturing Thinking skills, and enabling others to Achieve their goals, which are the three pillars of mentoring approach.

At its heart, mentoring is a relationship built on trust, respect, and the shared goal of growth. It is about inspiring values and action, nurturing thinking skills, and supporting achievement in ways that empower the mentee to take charge of their own journey. It is not supervision or micromanagement, where the focus is on control rather than growth. It is not about moulding someone into a copy of the mentor, nor is it a one-off inspirational talk that fades the next day. Rather than pushing from the outside, good mentoring draws on intrinsic motivation, tapping into a person’s curiosity, passions, and sense of purpose. When mentees feel ownership of their goals, see their progress, and connect their learning to something meaningful, they are more likely to sustain the effort and joy of learning, becoming lifelong learners who continue to grow beyond the mentoring relationship.

While AI increasingly takes over the role of content delivery, the teacher’s role is to be a facilitator of learning and, more importantly, a mentor, embodying qualities that are sacred to humans and cannot be replaced by AI. These include offering genuine encouragement, providing comfort in moments of struggle, unlocking hidden potential, nurturing resilience, and inspiring a love for lifelong learning.

The figure below shows the three pillars of the mentoring approach. Each pillar represents a vital dimension of a mentoring relationship.
